A lonesome feeder

This cute little bird feeder we got for Christmas.  We have had very few guests so far.  There was a few Chickadees a couple of days ago.  Perhaps it's the mild winter.

  2. You might know this stuff already... ...I love birds and having them around is a big deal for me. We quit feeding a while ago due to finances.

I still have chickadees that check in on our feeder now and then -- two years since I have had anything in it though.

I think it looks like there is too much of the red millet(?). Not that it keeps them away, but some feeds have a lot of "fillers" and/or don't have a lot of what the locals eat.

I primarily use the oil black sunflower seed for the chickadees, nuthatches, groosbeaks and finches.

I do like a mixed seed like the above too, choosing one that has more of the yellow or white millets. These would attract oregon juncos, pine siskins and the occasional song sparrow this time of year. Later in the spring, rufous-sided towhees and a variety of migrating sparrows will frequent it too - but usually, they will like to scratch around for it from the ground.

There is thistle seed (not really "thistle" as that is a noxious weed) that house finches, goldfinches, siskins and the like will show up for. But this is best served up in one of those little tube style feeders.

I have ended up with a lot of weeds from the millets - it grows like grass in tilled areas, but it's super easy to pull. I let it alone on the edges for the birds, but it's only fair to mention...
